19 May 2020: THE IMPORTANCE OF MATERIALS IN IMPROVING DURABILITY AND RELIABILITY IN UTILITY-SCALE PV
Solar Media’s Liam Stoker speaks with Stephan Padlewski from DuPont about the prospects of bifacial modules with a detailed discussion of the importance of materials that can provide durability and reliability over a 30+ year period. The importance of using a thicker tempered glass frontsheet, with a Clear Tedlar® backsheet, in a conventional bifacial panel design, helps to mitigate risks observed in dual glass bifacial panels, such as panel bowing, breaking and cracking either in the field or during installation. Padlewski highlights the need for backsheets to be breathable, to prevent PID. He points to utility-scale projects in the Middle East with an LCOE below 1.5 cents per kWh, operating in harsh climatic conditions, making durability and reliability the most critical factors for developers and investors to consider.
